Lumecca-I IPL vs Forma-I RF for Dry Eye: What’s the Difference?

Lumecca-I IPL vs Forma-I RF for Dry Eye: What’s the Difference?

Dry eye is not always caused by a lack of tears. For many patients, the problem involves meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, which affects the oil layer of the tear film and allows tears to evaporate too quickly. At You & Eyes Optometry, Lumecca-I IPL and Forma-I RF are advanced in-office treatments that can be used to address factors contributing to dry eye, but they work in different ways.

What Is Lumecca-I IPL for Dry Eye?

Lumecca-I uses intense pulsed light, or IPL, delivered around the eye area. IPL uses controlled pulses of light energy and can be incorporated into treatment plans for evaporative dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction.

IPL has been studied for its ability to improve signs and symptoms associated with MGD-related dry eye. By addressing inflammatory and vascular factors around the eyelids, treatment may help support healthier meibomian gland function and a more stable tear film.

What Is Forma-I RF for Dry Eye?

Forma-I uses bipolar radiofrequency, or RF, energy rather than light. The treatment delivers controlled thermal energy to the periorbital area and eyelids. This heat helps warm the tissues around the meibomian glands and may help soften thickened oils that are difficult to release.

Healthy meibomian glands produce oils that slow tear evaporation. When the glands become clogged or the oil becomes too thick, patients may experience burning, fluctuating vision, irritation, redness, or a gritty sensation.

How Are Lumecca-I IPL and Forma-I RF Different?

The biggest difference is the type of energy used and the way each treatment approaches dry eye.

  • Lumecca-I IPL uses pulses of light and may help address inflammatory and vascular factors associated with dry eye.
  • Forma-I RF uses controlled radiofrequency heat to warm the eyelid area and support meibomian gland function.
  • IPL focuses on light-responsive tissue around the eyelids.
  • RF focuses on delivering controlled thermal energy to tissues surrounding the meibomian glands.
  • The two technologies may be used together when a patient has multiple contributors to evaporative dry eye.

Do You Need IPL, RF, or Both?

There is no single dry eye treatment that is right for everyone. Some patients have aqueous-deficient dry eye, while others have oil deficiency, inflammation, blepharitis, allergies, environmental triggers, or a combination of factors. A dry eye evaluation helps identify what is disrupting the tear film before a treatment plan is recommended.

For patients with meibomian gland dysfunction, Lumecca-I IPL and Forma-I RF can complement each other because they approach the problem differently. Depending on your exam findings, treatment may also be combined with meibomian gland care, lid hygiene, prescription medications, punctal occlusion, or other therapies available at our practice.
